The Cultural Heritage Department at Ministry of Culture, Sport and Tourism reports that 3 billion VND (USD 144,000) from the ministry’s budget will be used to eliminate termites which have been seriously destructing numerous historical constructions in Hoi An in recent years.

This project is implemented after a great success of another similar project, which has contributed significantly to combat termites as well as other insects, and to cease them to further demolish more ancient buildings this cultural city.

However, the responsibility of project team is challenging because its mission is not only to apply efficient methods to eliminate entirely the termites in the long-run, but also to guarantee that these methods are harmless to environment and nearby neighborhoods.

There are various other projects with identical purpose will be commenced in diverse tourism destinations in Vietnam, mostly at three popular locations including Hoi An Ancient Town, My Son Sanctuary and Hue Imperial city. One of those is a large three-year project in Hoi An next year that is worth more than VND 40 billion (USD 1.92 million) but waiting for improvements from the government.

A recent research conducted by Institute for Termite Control and Building Protection on 1,521 ancient constructions in Hoi An shows that old architectures in this charming town are severely damaged by termites and other insects for a long time from earlier period of them. Among these studied constructions, one fifth is emergently requiring termite eradication to avoid crumbling.
