Hang Bo - Street Of Baskets
In the French colonial period, Hang Bo was known as Rue Des Paniers.
Hang Bo street has a total length of 272m long, in connection with Hang Bac through the intersection with Hang Dao and Hang Ngang, passing the intersection of Luong Van Can-Hang Can and the street end at Hang Thiec- Bat Dan junction at Hoan Kiem district.
In the French colonial times, Rue Des Paniers was the name of the street which later was changed officially to Hang Bo after the August Revolution. Formerly, the middle trunk of Hang Bo street was home to many shops selling things made of bamboo. On spring days near Tet occasion, the whole street was filled with people going to and fro with a lot of bamboo basket sold out.
Not only that, at the times before 1945, Hang Bo street was also the cultural destination for people who admire the exquisite essence of calligraphy art each time Tet Holiday came. On those days, the sidewalk of Hang Bo street became more beautiful in a spring theme of red paper and black ink. Knowledgeable calligraphers from other provinces like Ha Dong, Nam Dinh, Bac Ninh gathered here and express their talent in literature.
In addition, many people from Dong Ho village and Hang Trong street brought their cheerful brightly-colored folklore paintings to this place and sold them as nice decoration for springtime. Hang Bo Street also had many household making incense whose reputation was spread nationwide for the sweet fragrance diffused from their high-quality products.
Nowadays, Hang Bo Street had some changes with more buildings and more types of trade like haberdashery items at daytime and grilled squid at night time.
