Hang Luoc - Street Of Combs
Hang Luoc street has its north end connected to Hang Cot street. From there, the street spread its length to the intersection of 4 streets: Hang Ma- Cha Ca- Hang Dong- Thuoc Bac, along the bank of the River. For that reason, Hang Luoc street used to carried the name “ Song To Lich” Street ( “song” means” river”).
From the estuary joined with Red River, To Lich flowed to the east-west direction and bends its way to north-west direction at Hang Ca street, running to the Hanoi boundary wall, building up a natural trench to protect the citadel.
In the past, people from Hang Dong street had to move through a bamboo bridge to get across to the market. Later, the bridge was replaced with a big culvert. Therefore, the street also known under another name as Cong Cheo- Hang Luoc ( “cong cheo” means “ skew culvert”). About Hang Luoc name, it was definitely because the street used to have household sellling comb both retail and wholesale. Wooden comb, horn comb were produced in other places and brought here by residents on the street.
Hang Luoc had been a busy trading area before To Lich river disappeared. After that, Hang Luoc residents relied on Dong Xuan market to make their living. Nowadays, Hang Luoc street is filled with shops of various goods. When Lunar New Year comes, vehicles are blocked from the street to yield the space for the only-once-a-year flower fair, where the spring atmosphere spills all over flowers and cheerful faces.
