Hang Non - Street of Conical Hats
In comparison with other streets in the nearby area, Hang Non street is longer with a length of 216 metres, beginning at Duong Thanh street and ending at Hang Quat- Hang Hom T-junction.
The old Hang Non street in the past was just a part of Hang Non street of modern day. The part at Duong Thanh’s end just appeared after it was opened as a new road. The other part from Hang Thiec To Hang Hom was once named Ma Vi street.
In the old days, on the main part of the street, there were many shops selling leaf-made cone hats. Up to several early years of 20th century, both Vietnamese women and men, including Hanoians, all wore cone hats. While men had cone hat with silver top or bronze top, women had more choices from normal to high-class ones. Laborers might choose “ non ba tam” , “pan hat” made from fan-palm leaves; whereas, “non quai thao” was more pricey choice. From late years in the first decade of 20th century, few people used cone hat as they switched to using umbrella and scarfs.
Only people who led a hard life with manual work still wore cone hats. Gradually, cone hat shops were replaced by other trading items. Some shops sold painted wooden clogs like My Sinh va My Thinh shop. Nowadays, the street is always on an exciting mode with streetside café at Duong Thanh corner, where people gather to have a day started. The middle and the last chunk are filled with many fashion shops for youngsters.
