Ma May
Just spreading humbly on a length of nearly 300m, Ma May street is now among a few street to embrace most ancient houses in Hanoi. Normally, the streets started with “hang” let you know more about traditional crafts and business of the old days. However, much more special in its own way, Ma May street will show the liveliness of capital’s culture as well as architecture quintessence in the early 20s.
The streets holds up to 10% of the ancient house in and it is regarded as a miniature complex of Old Quarter right in its space. Ma May was the combined name of Hang Ma and Hang May. Nowadays, Ma May street starts from Hang Buom to Hang Bac.
Unlike straights roads within the Old Quarter, the street bends its ways along small houses, which makes it uniquely lovely. If your are a gastronomy lover, house 25th of artisan Anh Tuyet will be a great drop-by where the love for Hanoi cuisine is fully put into every cooking lesson she leads. The house is built up entirely by wood to recreate the homey and cozy atmosphere with charming touches of an urban house in the old times.
Most remarkably, the house at number 87 has been there seeing ups and downs of history since the early 19th century. This house still remains its vintage architecture style which looks much alike figures in Bui Xuan Phai’s paintings. There are so many things to see here. Objects in the house is made from woods, bamboo, coconut shells. Apart from those little things, visitors can also enjoy “Ca tru” traditional singing in some evenings of the week.
