Tho Nhuom Street
Whether it’s because of their cultural riches, shopping opportunities or entertainment hubs, 36 old streets and guilds of the Hanoi Old Quarter always attract visitors from the first sight. Among those, Tho Nhuom Street gets its picture snapped most often for the diversity of architecture, cuisine and tourist sites.
Tho Nhuom Street stretches from Hang Bong Street to Ba Trieu Street, crossing Hai Ba Trung, Quan Su, Ly Thuong Kiet and Quang Trung Street. It’s about 930m long.
History
Legend has it that dyeing cloths was the traditional business in the first part of this street dating back to the beginning of the Nguyen Dynasty. Most professional dyers were from the villages of Lieu Xa, Lieu Xuyen and Van Hoang.
During the French colonial period, the section from Hang Bong to Hai Ba Trung was called rue des Tenturiers and the rest was named rue Jean Soler. Presently, Tho Nhuom Street appeals many visitors with a wide range of upmarket restaurants, food strips, coffee chains, nightclubs and hotels.
